Stone Temple Pilots was formed in 1989 in San Diego, California, United States. The original band members include Scott Weiland as the lead vocals, Eric Kretz on drums, and brothers Dean Deleo on guitars and Robert Deleo on bass. Weiland was fired in February 2013 by the band.

The band was initially named the Mighty Joe Young. After signing a deal with American record label Atlantic Records, they changed their name to Stone Temple Pilots. The band released its debut album, Core, in 1992, which became a major commercial success.

Stone Temple Pilots got commercial success in the 90s, as they sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, with 18 million in the United States alone. Other notable albums of the band include Purple in 1994, Shangri-La Dee Da in 2001, and Tiny Music… songs from the Vatican Gift Shop.

The band separated in 2002, and the band members took individual projects, which include collaborating with American hard rock band Velvet Revolver and Army of Anyone.
